How we collect, prepare, and analyse UK public data

UKPublicdata.co.uk follows a transparent and consistent methodology to ensure that all published education data is accurate, understandable, and useful. This page explains how datasets are sourced, processed, and analysed on our platform.

1. Data Collection

We collect education-related datasets from official UK government and public sector sources, including departments, agencies, and publicly funded bodies responsible for education data.

Our sources include, but are not limited to:

  • UK government departments

  • Arm’s-length bodies and regulators

  • Publicly funded education authorities

All data is obtained from publicly accessible sources and published under open licences, primarily the Open Government Licence (OGL) v3.0.

2. Data Cleaning & Preparation

Raw public datasets often contain inconsistencies, missing values, or formats that are difficult to use. Before publication, we carry out structured data preparation, which may include:

  • Standardising names, dates, and categories

  • Removing duplicate or incomplete records where appropriate

  • Organising fields for consistency across datasets

  • Converting data into searchable and readable formats

No original records are altered or created. Cleaning is performed solely to improve clarity and usability.

3. Data Analysis

We analyse datasets to help users understand patterns, trends, and key characteristics within UK education data.

Our analysis may include:

  • Summary statistics and counts

  • Comparisons across time, regions, or categories

  • Identification of notable changes or outliers

  • Plain-English interpretation of findings

Analysis is descriptive and informational. We do not provide predictions, policy recommendations, or legal advice.

4. Presentation & Visualisation

To improve accessibility, we present data using:

  • Searchable tables and filters

  • Simple charts or summaries where appropriate

  • Clear headings and consistent structure

Our aim is to reduce complexity and help users quickly find relevant information.

5. Accuracy & Limitations

6. Updates & Revisions

Datasets are reviewed and updated when new versions are released by the original source. Significant changes or revisions are reflected clearly on the relevant dataset page.

7. Independence & Transparency

UKPublicdata.co.uk is an independent platform. We do not represent the UK government or any public authority, and no endorsement is implied.

All analysis and presentation are carried out independently and transparently.
